Clara the Traveling Rhino
In 1738, an orphaned Indian Rhinoceros named Clara was adopted by Jan Albert Sichterman. Clara grew up gentle and tame, and she was taken on a tour of Europe. Jean-Baptiste Oudry painted a life-sized portrait of her in 1749, which was exhibited in the Getty Museum in 2007. I was fortunate enough to have seen this exhibit, and I went home that day with a little stuffed rhino from the gift shop. A couple of years later, I started taking Clara (the little stuffed rhino, that is) on all my trips, snapping pictures of her in prime spots. Here's where she's been so far:
