All Kirk
March 2010

The Enemy Within - it's a classic episode of the original Star Trek. As a result of one of those danged transporter mishaps, two Captain Kirks are beamed aboard the Enterprise. Who is the real Kirk? Technically they both are - Kirk has been divided into his "good" self and his "evil" self.

Evil Kirk runs amuck aboard the ship, getting drunk on Saurian Brandy and trying to have his way with Yeoman Rand (tsk tsk). Good Kirk lounges around with the crew, essentially forgetting how to give orders.

Evil Kirk is entirely self-serving, demanding everything he wants with no regard whatsoever to anyone else. Good Kirk is a nice guy...but weak and lacking in confidence and charisma.

Evil Kirk doesn't care whom he hurts, as long as it serves his purpose. Good Kirk is a spineless sissy and has no idea what he wants.

One party is overly aggressive without ever considering the consequences or long-term effects. The other party is incapable of making decisions and is missing all essential qualities of leadership.

...I'm sorry, what were we talking about?

Oh, that's right - Good Kirk and Evil Kirk. Okay, I'm back on track. As the episode progresses, it is discovered that neither Kirk will survive on his own. They must be rejoined. Only by being All Kirk can he have both compassion and confidence, a strong will as well as an open mind. Only by being All Kirk can he be...well, a whole person. And saving Kirk's life isn't all that's at stake here. A landing party is stranded on the nearby planet of Alpha 177, and they will freeze to death if left there all night. Only with All Kirk's leadership can they be saved. They are doomed as long as he remains two entities - one Kirk doesn't give a crap about their lives while the other Kirk is too much of a pansy to do anything about it. For fuck's sake, Spock, Scotty, can you fix the god damned transporter and combine both parties so that America actually has a chance of being healed and moving forward??

...

Um, sorry. I got lost again.

*sigh*
